He was born in Montreal, Canada and raised as a conservative Jew. The original spelling of his last name was Schattner before his grandparents anglicized it after immigrating to Canada from Europe.
His acting career started with classical Shakespearean training before getting roles in television then in theatrical productions. From his first film role in 1951 to the present he has almost never stopped working as a successful actor.
One of his most memorable roles was in the episode of The Twilight Zone where he was apparently losing his mind imagining a gremlin tearing open the wing of a commercial airliner while in-flight. Though his role as James T. Kirk on the television show Star Trek was relatively short-lived, he is most widely associated with that franchise.
In addition to his work in Star Trek, he has starred and co-starred in many hit shows earning him critical acclaim and increased popularity. He also often appears as himself in many venues. And one of his most popular roles is as a pitch man for an online travel agency.
He is widely recognized by those who have worked with him as very self-loving and condescending to others. Still, he has been loved as an actor for over 50 years.
