She was born the child of an affluent Alabama family who later studied architecture in college before dropping out and pursuing a career in entertainment.

She was first widely recognized as the girl in Bruce Springsteen's video Dancing in the Dark. She then became the first person in history to use the word "period" in reference to menstruation, which was for a role in a Tampax tampon commercial.

She had starring roles in several television shows and films before rising to global fame as Monica Gellar in the television show Friends. She co-starred on the show for all of its 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004.

Since the end of Friends she has had continuing, moderate success on television.
