William H. Gates III was born to lower-upper class parents. Early in his life he discovered a love for computers and software. He fought to spend as much time on computers as possible, developing his programming skills.

He was so skilled that he was hired to work developing software for a company while still in school. He had great vision and saw the potential for personal computers.

He created Microsoft and was working on a version of BASIC for the new IBM PC. IBM could not come to an agreement with a vendor on an operating system for their PC, so Gates bought the rights to QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System) for $50,000 and re-branded it MS-DOS. He charged IBM a one-time fee of $50,000 for the operating system but retained the rights to it.

This was an incredibly wise business decision that he decided on after predicting that other computer vendors would imitate IBM's hardware and probably then desire the same operating system for that hardware. He was right.

From there sales of the operating system shot upward and still have not come back down. He had a hand in every move the company move for the next couple of decades, becoming the richest man in the world.

In 2006 he started seriously backing away from a significant role at Microsoft to focus on philanthropic endeavors with his wife. Among other things in his role as philanthropist, he has spent billions around the world to improve the health and living conditions of the impoverished.
